Assessing A Neighborhood

Buying a home isn’t just about the owning the walls around you and the roof over your head. It’s about the neighborhood in which it’s located. Because that neighborhood is going to play a major role in your happiness.

In fact – some say where you buy is almost more important than what you buy. The best way to pick a neighborhood you’ll love, is to do a neighborhood review.

Aesthetics – Is this neighborhood you’ll be okay seeing every day? Whether or not your neighborhood is pleasing to you aesthetically can have a big impact on how happy you are to be there.

Affordability – Of course you need to be able to afford the down payment and monthly mortgage payment. But can you also afford to actually live there? Some of the neighborhoods you might consider could mean additional transpiration costs and increased cost of goods, like groceries. Make sure you’re ready for any inflated expenses.

Safety – Do you feel safe there? Research the crime rate. Take a look at whether or not there are any listed sex offenders in the area.

Goods & Services – How close is the nearest grocery store and coffee shop? Do you workout regularly? How far is the neighborhood from your gym? Are these distances you’re comfortable traveling on a regular basis?

Walkability – Do you like to walk places? If so, you’ll want a neighborhood that’s walkable. Consider whether or not there are pedestrian pathways and how many other people you see using them.

Neighbors – Take the time to walk around the neighborhood and talk to the residents. Knock on doors. Ask folks what they like about living there. Often you’ll be able to tell how friendly people are and whether or not you’d be comfortable living near them consistently.
